Jeep Cherokee XJ Regear Chart (1984-2001)
Factory transmissions, transfer cases and axle ratios for the Jeep Cherokee XJ — with the two tables every regear decision runs on: cruise RPM at 70 mph and crawl ratio, for every ratio you can actually buy. All data verified against manufacturer specs (sources at the bottom of the page).

Axles under this platform
- Dana 30 (high pinion) Carrier break: 3.73 (3.54 & numerically lower use the low carrier; 3.73 & higher use the high carrier). TJ unit is low-pinion (2000+). Fine to 33s locked / 35s open with chromoly shafts; ring gear size, not shafts, is the ceiling.
- Chrysler 8.25 (97-01, 29-spline) or Dana 35 Carrier break: 3.31 (3.07-3.31 low carrier; 3.55 & higher high carrier). 7.58-in ring, 27-spline c-clip shafts (TJ/JL M200 variant differs). The classic fuse axle: avoid lockers + 35s. Super 35 kits (30-spline) change the math.

High-pinion Dana 30 front is stronger in gear terms than TJ low-pinion. Chrysler 8.25 (29-spline, 1997-01) is a genuine upgrade over Dana 35 and has no carrier break. Years span Peugeot BA10 and AX-5 manuals on early/4-cyl models — omitted here, see SOURCES.md.
